General Information:
The Great Dane, better known as a gentle giant is very sweet, affectionate,
and playful. Due to their size, they should always be supervised around
children, but are generally well mannered. The Great Dane is a great family dog
and can be a fairly good watch or guard dog, partly due to size. Known as a
gentle giant they seem intimidating but in reality are a sweet and loving
family member.
Character: This is
a very responsible and dependable breed, making him/her a great family pet. This
breed should be extensively trained as a puppy so they do not jump on
people, especially children, or have any difficult behavioral problems in the future.
Temperament: Their
sheer size makes this breed very intimidating, however this dog is very
gentle and loving. They can do well around other dogs, but should be
socialized to prevent them from becoming dog aggressive. The Great Dane is a very
playful and loyal breed. They love the couch and the bed if you let them.
Care:
Combing and
brushing the short coat of this Giant dog breed regularly is important for
skin and hair health. Rubber brushing also does well in removing any loose
hair. Keeping nails trimmed and ears clean is a necessary grooming duty. Bathing a
Great Dane can be difficult due to his size, so get your Dane comfortable
with the bath early on in life. The Dane sheds mostly all year long.

Training: The
Great Dane requires firm yet gentle training.
Obedience training at an early age is best, as this breed can prove very
difficult to train when full grown. Reward behavior you want; do not punish
bad behavior with physical means it only confuses the puppy and never makes
any training progress.
Activity: The
Great Dane should have a large sized yard and plenty of exercise room. A
very large breed, he requires very long walks regularly. It is important to
monitor the length of activity especially of the puppy Dane, frequent brakes
for rest are important in protecting the joints from damage.
Ownership:
If you
are looking for Great Dane puppies for sale from reputable Great Dane
breeders or to adopt a Great Dane from a Great Dane rescue then make sure
you understand as much about the Great Dane Breed as you can before you
bring a puppy Dane home. Every puppy breed is different. Begin your research by reading the
breed information. Consider
adoption of an older
Dane as many Great Danes are starved and abandoned and need good homes. |
